A 20-year-old college student and former competitive swimmer is facing murder charges after a security guard was brutally beaten to death at a Hawaii resort last week.
The victim, 63-year-old Michael Dyer, was found dead at a condominium resort in Lahaina, Maui, on Wednesday, Aug. 5, according to the Maui Police Department.
Police said officers were called to the property on Lower Honoapiʻilani Road at around 5:31 a.m. after receiving a report of an unresponsive man.
By the time officers arrived, medics had already determined that Dyer had died from his injuries.
Investigators later pieced together a disturbing timeline.
Police said that at approximately 1:45 a.m., a naked man arrived at the resort and allegedly attacked Dyer inside his office, beating him to death before fleeing on foot.
Surveillance footage reportedly captured the suspect leaving the scene.
Hours later, officers found a naked man wandering in the Kahana area with what police described as “numerous abrasions.”
He was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Investigators later determined that the man found in Kahana was the same person seen in surveillance footage from the resort, police said.
The suspect was arrested the following day.
Authorities initially identified him only as a 20-year-old Lahaina man, but he has since been named in court records and by local media as Legend Storer.
Court records cited by Hawaii News Now allege that Storer may have used a five-gallon water container during the fatal attack.
A possible motive has not been publicly revealed.
Dyer’s family said he was working the overnight graveyard shift at the resort when he was killed.
A GoFundMe created for his widow, Joy, described Dyer as a beloved husband. The couple had been married for 26 years.
A former coworker of Joy reportedly described Dyer as “the love of her life.”
Hawaii News Now reported that the couple did not have children.
Storer previously competed on the swim team at Concordia University Irvine in California, according to a profile on the school’s website.
The profile states that he was a two-time Maui Interscholastic League champion in 2024.
He later transferred out of Concordia, according to Hawaii News Now.
Storer has been charged with second-degree murder, burglary involving a dangerous instrument and indecent exposure, according to court records.
He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The killing has shocked the Maui community as investigators continue working to determine what led up to the bizarre and deadly encounter.
