A road trip to Wisconsin turned into a terrifying family violence case after a 21-year-old woman allegedly stabbed her mother at least 10 times in a Chick-fil-A parking lot in Georgia, authorities said.
The incident unfolded Thursday, Aug. 20, after 21-year-old Shyanniah Ma’Ree Johnson and her 39-year-old mother got into an argument while traveling north on Interstate 75, according to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators said the pair pulled off the highway and into the parking lot of a Chick-fil-A in Acworth, where the dispute escalated while they were still inside their vehicle.
That is when authorities say Johnson attacked her mother.
“During the altercation, Johnson assaulted her mother, who sustained no less than 10 stab wounds,” the sheriff’s office said.
Johnson also suffered an injury to her leg during the confrontation.
After the stabbing, the wounded mother reportedly ran inside the Chick-fil-A looking for help.
Acworth police officers happened to be inside the restaurant and immediately stepped in until paramedics arrived.
The woman was transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital for treatment.
Authorities said Johnson then drove away from the scene with two children inside the vehicle.
Investigators initially had only a description of the vehicle, but they were able to use automated license plate reader technology to identify it and alert other law enforcement agencies.
“All we had was a description of the vehicle,” Capt. Jay Baker said. “We were able to use ALPR technology and Flock technology to get a tag and then reach out to our police partners in the north part of the state.”
Deputies with the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office later located the vehicle and pulled Johnson over.
She was taken into custody.
The two children were not injured and were later placed in the custody of the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services in Whitfield County, according to the sheriff’s office.
Following her arrest, Johnson was transported to Hamilton Medical Center in Dalton for treatment of the leg injury she sustained during the altercation.
She was charged with aggravated assault under Georgia’s Family Violence Act.
Her mother has since been released from the hospital.
Johnson, however, remained hospitalized while receiving treatment for her injury.
Authorities have not publicly said what sparked the argument between the mother and daughter.
The investigation remains ongoing, and the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office said additional charges are possible as detectives continue reviewing exactly what happened before and during the stabbing.
