A Las Vegas man is accused of killing his girlfriend and her two children after she allegedly admitted cheating on him and made a cruel comment about her ex-boyfriend, police say.
Juan Orona, 29, turned himself in shortly after 7 p.m. Tuesday with a gunshot wound to his abdomen and allegedly told authorities that he had shot his girlfriend, Nohani Flores-Osuna, and her two children.
The victims were identified as 16-year-old Maiya and Noah, who was in kindergarten.
According to an arrest report obtained by KLAS, Orona told investigators the deadly confrontation began after he spotted Flores-Osuna’s car parked near a vehicle belonging to her ex-boyfriend, identified only as “Henry,” earlier that day.
Orona later confronted Flores-Osuna at an apartment complex in west Las Vegas.
During the argument, Flores-Osuna allegedly admitted that she had been unfaithful and told Orona that her ex-boyfriend was “better in bed,” according to what Orona later told police.
Orona claimed that after hearing the comment, he “blacked out.”
He allegedly told detectives that his next clear memory was standing in the bathroom holding his 9mm Glock handgun while Flores-Osuna and her two children were lying dead on the floor.
Police responded to the apartment in the 5100 block of O’Bannon Drive, near Sahara Avenue and Decatur Boulevard, and forced their way inside.
Officers found all three victims dead.
According to the arrest report, Orona told police he vaguely remembered Flores-Osuna and her children either yelling at him or moving toward him while he was in what he described as a blackout.
He could not provide investigators with many other details about what happened.
Police said Orona did not deny shooting the three victims, but allegedly claimed he could not remember who he shot first or why.
Orona also told dispatchers that the shooting happened inside the apartment where he had been staying with Flores-Osuna and her children.
He allegedly said the gun used in the killings was inside a backpack in his vehicle.
Authorities took Orona to Sunrise Hospital for treatment of the gunshot wound to his abdomen.
The arrest report did not indicate whether that wound was self-inflicted.
Investigators said Orona and Flores-Osuna had been dating for approximately three to six months.
He had also reportedly been helping pay the rent at the apartment where the killings took place.
According to police, Orona told detectives that he knew he needed to surrender and be held accountable for what had happened.
His father also spoke with investigators and said Orona called him at around 7 p.m. Tuesday, telling him that he had hurt his girlfriend and her children.
Orona’s father then accompanied him and Orona’s brother when he surrendered to authorities.
The 29-year-old appeared in court Thursday.
His court-appointed public defender asked the judge to postpone a decision on bail so the defense could have more time to review the case.
Orona is facing three counts of open murder with a deadly weapon as well as 10 counts of discharging a firearm into an occupied structure.
He remains jailed at the Clark County Detention Center and is scheduled to return to court on September 9.
The case remains under investigation.
