A Florida man has been arrested after police say he climbed onto a JetBlue plane during overnight maintenance, hid inside the bathroom and fell asleep before airline workers discovered him hours later.
Sammuel Lackey, 32, allegedly climbed a fence at Jetscape Services on the grounds of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on the night of Saturday, Aug. 1.
The JetBlue aircraft, a 2012 Airbus A320, was being held at the facility for maintenance at the time, according to a booking report.
Police said Lackey used portable steps attached to the aircraft that allowed maintenance workers to enter and leave the plane.
The left rear door was open, giving him access to the cabin.
After boarding, Lackey allegedly hid inside one of the plane’s bathrooms.
Maintenance crews finished their work at around 4:25 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, and closed and latched the aircraft doors without realizing Lackey was still inside.
The plane was then pushed back into a parking space.
About an hour later, JetBlue employees allegedly found Lackey asleep inside the aircraft.
Local station WPLG reported that his actions were captured on surveillance video.
The bizarre incident also disrupted JetBlue’s operations.
The aircraft was unable to reach its gate for a scheduled flight, forcing the airline to replace it with another plane.
JetBlue said the interruption caused $2,400.96 in losses, according to the booking report.
As of Thursday, Aug. 6, Lackey was being held at the Broward Main Jail.
He faces charges of unarmed burglary of an occupied conveyance, criminal mischief causing more than $1,000 in damage and interrupting or impairing critical infrastructure, according to online jail records.
His total bond was set at $10,000.
“The safety of our customers and crewmembers is JetBlue’s first priority,” the airline said in a statement.
“We will assist law enforcement with any relevant investigation.”
