A Massachusetts gym was thrown into chaos Thursday morning after police say a man entered the women’s locker room at a Planet Fitness in Cambridge and sexually assaulted multiple people.

Laquan Holland, 40, was arrested at the scene after officers responded to an emergency call shortly after 9 a.m. at the gym in Porter Square.

The Planet Fitness is located on the ground floor of Lesley University’s University Hall, but the gym itself is a private business.

According to Cambridge police, officers were told that a man had entered the women’s locker room and assaulted people inside. Holland was located and taken into custody at approximately 9:22 a.m.

Police have not publicly said exactly how many people were allegedly assaulted.

One victim was transported to a hospital for evaluation following the incident.

A person familiar with what happened told PEOPLE that Holland had arrived at the gym with a female guest. An incident allegedly occurred between the two, prompting a gym employee to intervene and call police.

Authorities have not publicly released further details about that portion of the encounter.

Planet Fitness said the franchise group canceled Holland’s membership following the arrest.

The company also said it was cooperating with law enforcement and emphasized that it is committed to maintaining a safe environment for members and guests.

The allegations have rattled some people who regularly use the gym.

One woman told NBC Boston she had always felt comfortable changing clothes and working out at the location but said the arrest would now make her more cautious.

A Lesley University student also described the allegations as disturbing and said people should be able to feel safe in places they visit every day.

Court records reviewed by The Boston Globe indicate Holland had also faced a charge in August for allegedly failing to register as a sex offender, though that charge was dismissed the same day.

The Globe further reported that Holland pleaded guilty in 2006 to two counts of child rape and one count of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14.

The new allegations from Thursday remain just that — allegations — and Holland is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Police had not released full arraignment details as of the latest reports.
