A Pennsylvania Walmart employee who had just celebrated her birthday was shot and killed by a masked gunman as she prepared to drive home from work, leaving behind three children, three grandchildren and a grieving community desperate for answers.

Latosha Ann Cooper, 45, had just finished her shift Wednesday night, October 21, when she was attacked in the parking lot of the Walmart at Cedarbrook Plaza in Cheltenham Township, just outside Philadelphia.

According to Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele, Cooper was standing beside her vehicle around 11:30 p.m. when someone wearing a mask approached and opened fire.

The gunman fled, leaving Cooper critically wounded in the parking lot where she had worked for years.

Police responded to the shopping center on Easton Road shortly after 11:20 p.m. and discovered Cooper on the ground near a white Nissan. Investigators also found a bullet hole in the vehicle’s rear door.

Emergency responders rushed Cooper to a nearby hospital, but she could not be saved.

The circumstances of the attack have raised troubling questions, particularly because investigators have not established whether Cooper was specifically targeted or why the gunman confronted her.

As of Saturday, October 24, authorities had not publicly identified a suspect or announced an arrest.

The killing has been especially devastating for Cooper’s family because it happened just two days after her birthday.

She turned 45 on Monday, October 19, a milestone that should have marked another year of celebrations with her loved ones.

Instead, her three children and three grandchildren are now mourning a sudden loss that has left the family searching for answers.

Cooper was also a familiar face at the Walmart where she had spent approximately 22 years working.

According to local reporting, she most recently served as a stocking coach, helping oversee employees responsible for keeping store shelves supplied.

After more than two decades with the retailer, the shopping center had become part of her everyday life. Wednesday night was supposed to end like countless other shifts, with Cooper getting into her car and heading home.

But investigators say the masked attacker struck before she could leave.

The Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office and Cheltenham Police Department have launched a joint homicide investigation, with detectives examining evidence from the parking lot and trying to determine the shooter’s movements before and after the attack.

Authorities have not disclosed whether surveillance cameras captured the shooting or provided a description of the suspect beyond the mask.

The investigation remains active, and officials have urged anyone who witnessed suspicious activity around the shopping center to contact police.

Meanwhile, Walmart has expressed its condolences and pledged to cooperate with investigators.

“We’re heartbroken by what occurred outside our Wyncote, PA, store last night,” the company said in a statement.

Walmart also announced that it was providing mental health support for employees affected by the tragedy.

The store remained closed Friday as coworkers and community members struggled to process what had happened.

The fatal shooting has also revived memories of another violent incident at the same Walmart in August 2018, when a gunman opened fire inside the store and injured five people.

The attacker in that case was later convicted and sentenced to prison. Authorities have not suggested any connection between the two shootings.

For Cooper’s family, however, the focus remains on finding the person responsible for her death.

Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact Montgomery County Detectives at 610-278-3368 or Cheltenham Police at 215-885-1600, extension 499. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through extension 777.

No motive has been announced, and police have not said whether Cooper knew her attacker.

What is certain is that a mother and grandmother who had spent decades working at the same store was killed just moments before she was supposed to return home.
