A candlelight vigil meant to honor a man killed in a shooting seven years ago erupted into another tragedy Monday night when gunfire broke out in a New Jersey neighborhood, leaving one person dead and four others wounded.

The October 26 shooting unfolded in Elizabeth, a city just outside New York City, where mourners had reportedly gathered to remember a man whose life was taken by gun violence in 2019. Instead of spending the evening reflecting on their loved one’s memory, those attending found themselves caught in a frightening emergency that sent police and paramedics rushing to the scene.

According to the Union County Prosecutor’s Office, officers responded to reports of gunfire near Irvington Avenue and Elmwood Place around 9:30 p.m. and discovered five people who had been shot. One victim was later pronounced dead, while four others received medical treatment for their injuries.

The shooting occurred near a residential area that has experienced similar tragedies in the past. Witnesses told local television stations that a crowd had assembled for a memorial honoring Jamile Robbins, who was fatally shot near the Oakwood Plaza Apartments on October 25, 2019.

The gathering was apparently intended to mark the seventh anniversary of his death, making Monday night’s violence especially heartbreaking for a community already familiar with the pain of losing someone to gunfire.

Witnesses described hearing numerous shots in rapid succession as the peaceful gathering descended into confusion. One person told ABC7 New York that a large amount of gunfire could be heard, while others recalled seeing police vehicles and emergency personnel arrive throughout the neighborhood.

The scale of the response became apparent as investigators cordoned off several blocks and began examining the area for evidence. Aerial footage showed numerous orange evidence markers scattered along the roadway, with witnesses estimating that more than 20 had been placed at the scene.

By Tuesday morning, investigators were still collecting shell casings and documenting evidence as they worked to reconstruct the moments leading up to the shooting.

Among the injured was an 18-year-old man whose father told CBS New York that his son was fighting for his life in the hospital. The father did not publicly identify his son, but his account offered a troubling glimpse of the uncertainty facing families awaiting news about their loved ones.

Earlier reports indicated that three victims had been transported to University Hospital in Newark, including one person who suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and two others who sustained injuries to their arms and legs. Officials subsequently confirmed a total of four surviving victims, although their individual medical conditions had not been fully disclosed.

As detectives worked through the evidence, attention also turned to a mysterious vehicle that may be connected to the attack.

According to ABC7, investigators received information that a red sedan had been seen fleeing westbound on Morris Avenue shortly after the shooting. Approximately an hour later, a red vehicle was discovered burning on Hobson Street in Newark, several miles from the original crime scene.

The discovery prompted authorities to examine whether the burning car might be connected to the violence in Elizabeth. However, investigators have not confirmed that it was used by anyone involved in the shooting, and the circumstances surrounding the vehicle fire remain unclear.

The unanswered questions have only added to the community’s concerns, particularly as police continue searching for those responsible.

As of Tuesday, October 27, authorities had not announced any arrests or publicly identified a suspect. Investigators also had not disclosed a possible motive, leaving it unclear whether the shooting was connected to the original homicide being remembered at the vigil or whether the gathering was targeted for another reason.

Although the vigil reportedly honored Robbins, officials have not established any direct connection between his death seven years ago and Monday night’s attack.

The Union County Prosecutor’s Office is leading the investigation alongside Elizabeth police, with detectives appealing to the public for information that could help identify those responsible.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the prosecutor’s homicide task force or submit an anonymous tip through Union County Crime Stoppers. A reward of up to $10,000 may be available for information leading to an indictment and conviction.

For residents of Elizabeth, the tragedy has brought renewed attention to the lasting impact of gun violence on families and neighborhoods. A gathering organized to remember one life lost has now left another family mourning and several others waiting for their loved ones to recover.
