A 15-year-old Maryland girl who accepted a ride to pick up food found herself fighting for her life after the driver allegedly kidnapped her and attacked her inside a Baltimore basement. Despite suffering serious injuries, the teenager managed to escape by striking her suspected attacker with a fire extinguisher before desperately searching the neighborhood for someone to help her.
Abubakarr Barrie, 23, of Baltimore, is now facing nine criminal charges, including attempted first-degree murder, kidnapping and assault, following the terrifying October 22 incident. Authorities say the teenager’s ordeal began when she left her sister’s home expecting a short trip to a takeout restaurant, unaware that the ride would allegedly lead to a violent confrontation.
According to charging documents, the girl had been visiting her sister in Baltimore’s Druid Heights neighborhood when she accepted a ride from Barrie, who was driving a white Hyundai. The arrangement was what locals call a “hack,” an informal taxi service operated by an unlicensed driver. She had asked to be taken to PlattaKing, a restaurant on Belair Road, but quickly realized something was wrong when Barrie began traveling in the opposite direction.
When the teenager questioned him about where they were going, the situation allegedly turned frightening. Investigators say Barrie suddenly became violent, wrapping his arm around her head and neck in a hold that prevented her from moving. Instead of taking her to the restaurant, he drove her to a home on Garrison Boulevard in northwest Baltimore, where he allegedly forced her out of the vehicle and into a small room in the basement.
Once inside, Barrie ordered the girl to put down her cellphone and remain quiet, according to court documents. The teenager told investigators that he then began removing her clothing and attacking her with a knife as she desperately struggled to defend herself.
Although seriously injured, the girl continued fighting back, scratching and struggling against the man until she spotted something that offered a possible way out.
A fire extinguisher.
In a desperate attempt to escape, the teenager grabbed the extinguisher and struck Barrie with it, creating an opportunity to break free. She then fled the basement and ran through the surrounding neighborhood without shoes or clothing, desperately knocking on doors and pleading for someone to call the police.
Her search for help finally ended when a nearby resident answered the door and allowed her to use a phone. The girl contacted her mother and called 911, bringing emergency responders to the area around 9:30 p.m.
Officers arriving in the 3800 block of Belle Avenue found the teenager suffering from multiple injuries. She was rushed to Sinai Hospital, where doctors determined she had sustained five stab wounds and a collapsed lung. Despite the seriousness of her condition, authorities later confirmed that she was expected to survive.
While recovering from the attack, the teenager provided investigators with information that would help them identify the man accused of abducting her. According to charging documents, Barrie had given her a phone number connected to a Cash App account so she could pay for the ride. Detectives used that information, along with her description of the vehicle, to narrow their search.
Investigators also traced the girl’s missing iPhone to the Garrison Boulevard residence where she said the attack had occurred. The combination of digital evidence and her account helped police identify Barrie as a suspect.
Baltimore police arrested him on Saturday, October 24, in the 3700 block of Garrison Boulevard, approximately two days after the teenager escaped. He was transported to the Central Booking Intake Facility and charged with attempted first- and second-degree murder, kidnapping, false imprisonment and several assault-related offenses.
During a court appearance on Monday, October 26, a judge ordered Barrie held without bond as prosecutors outlined the allegations against him. His public defender told the court that Barrie maintains his innocence.
Court proceedings also revealed that Barrie worked as an Uber Eats delivery driver. However, authorities have not indicated that the teenager arranged her ride through Uber or another licensed rideshare platform. Investigators described the encounter as an informal transportation arrangement rather than a trip booked through a commercial app.
The case has unsettled residents of the northwest Baltimore neighborhood, where some expressed disbelief that such a frightening incident could allegedly unfold inside a nearby home.
For investigators, the teenager’s account and the evidence recovered afterward have become central to a case involving serious allegations of violence against a minor. Authorities have not publicly identified a motive or explained whether Barrie had any previous connection to the girl.
Barrie remains in custody, with his next court hearing scheduled for November 25. He is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
Meanwhile, the teenager’s determination to escape has emerged as the most remarkable part of the ordeal. What began as an ordinary trip to pick up dinner allegedly turned into a frightening encounter inside an unfamiliar basement, but her decision to keep fighting ultimately helped her reach safety.
Despite her injuries, she managed to get away, find someone willing to help and provide investigators with crucial information that led to an arrest. Now, as the criminal case moves forward, the young survivor faces the difficult process of recovering from an experience no child should ever have to endure.
