A couple died in a shooting at their Louisiana home, and their grandson is accused of pulling the trigger, deputies said.
Colby Stokes, 23, reportedly confessed to a neighbor that he shot his grandparents Wednesday, July 3, WVUE reported, citing the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office. Deputies were called around 2 p.m. about a shooting in Mount Hermon, according to the station. The neighbor, who called 911, stayed with Stokes until authorities arrived.
They found two people who had been shot, WDSU reported, citing deputies. The male victim died at the scene, and the female victim died from her injuries at a hospital, authorities said.
The couple was identified as Beverly and Carley Stokes, WWL-TV reported. “This family, they’re on both sides of this,” Washington Parish Sheriff Jason Smith told the station. “Not only have they been victimized by it, they’ve also perpetrated it, so it’s a very difficult circumstance to be in.”
Authorities didn’t give details on a possible motive. McClatchy News reached out to the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office for more information Friday and was awaiting a response.
Stokes was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, online records show. He remained in the Washington Parish Jail without bond as of July 5.
Mount Hermon is about a 100-mile drive north from New Orleans.
