A man will serve at least five decades in prison for physically abusing a woman for several days, keeping her in a room with the doors and windows nailed shut.
Marion County Common Pleas Judge Warren Edwards sentenced Shane Hooper, 36, to 50-55.5 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to two counts of kidnapping, two counts of felonious assault, and two counts of rape.
Marion County Prosecutor Ray Grogan said Hooper kidnapped the woman and kept her at her home between May 2023 and early June 2023.
Hooper nailed the doors and windows shut and tortured her with a baseball bat and a metal chain, breaking her bones, leaving open wounds, and fracturing eight of her ribs. He also threatened to kill both her and her family.
Vigilant neighbors called police when he moved her from her home to a place on Silver Street in Marion.
Officers rescued the woman and charged Hoper with kidnapping and strangulation.
“The brave woman told us she had been praying for rescue, and God answered her prayers,” Prosecutor Grogan said.
A grand jury indicted him in June 2023 and added more charges in April 2024. He pleaded guilty in June and was sentenced on July 11.
“Shane Hooper created a torture chamber and trapped this woman in it,” Prosecutor Grogan said after the sentencing. “Now he’ll be trapped in prison for at least the next 50 years.”
