Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy was arrested Friday night in Williamson County, Texas, on a charge of assault involving a family or household member by impeding breathing or circulation.
The 21-year-old was booked into jail by the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office, though online records provided little detail about the arrest. As of early Saturday afternoon, Worthy had not posted bond.
The Chiefs acknowledged the situation, stating they were aware of Worthy’s arrest and were in the process of gathering information.
According to his attorneys, the incident stemmed from a dispute in which Worthy asked a woman to leave his residence. They claim the woman caused property damage and scratched Worthy’s face, among other actions, but said the wide receiver told police he did not wish to press charges.
“We will continue to cooperate with Williamson County authorities as we have full faith that their thorough investigation will support Mr. Worthy’s innocence,” his attorneys said in a statement.
Under Texas law, assault by impeding breathing or circulation is a third-degree felony, carrying a potential sentence of two to ten years in prison along with a $10,000 fine.
Worthy, the Chiefs’ first-round pick in 2024, made an impact as a rookie with 59 receptions for 638 yards and nine touchdowns.
