A Florida fast food worker is facing a first-degree murder charge after a late-night drive-thru argument turned deadly over what may have been extra mayonnaise.
According to police, 23-year-old Elijah Travis Mackey, an employee at a Checkers in Kissimmee, allegedly shot and killed a customer during a heated confrontation around 10:10 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21.
The victim, identified as Wesley Robertson, reportedly became upset about his order and asked to speak to a manager multiple times while at the pickup window, according to witnesses cited in the arrest affidavit.
That’s when things spiraled out of control.
Witnesses told authorities that Mackey walked outside from the back of the restaurant and got into a verbal exchange with Robertson, who allegedly called him either a “bitch” or a “p—-.” Moments later, Mackey reportedly pulled a handgun from his waistband and shot the customer in the chest.
One bystander said the dispute may have been over mayonnaise packets, while another stated that Mackey responded to the insult by saying, “Oh, I am p—-?” before firing.
Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators shows Mackey climbing out of the drive-thru window and approaching Robertson near the front of the restaurant. Robertson is then seen collapsing to the ground.
He was rushed to Osceola Regional Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.
Mackey fled the scene on foot and was later found hiding under a stairwell at a nearby hotel, according to the affidavit. As deputies arrested him, he allegedly admitted to having a firearm and repeatedly asked, “Is dude okay?”
On Thursday, May 22, the Osceola County Sheriff’s Homicide Unit obtained an arrest warrant for Mackey. He has been charged with first-degree premeditated murder and is currently being held in Osceola County Jail. His legal representation, if any, has not been confirmed.
In a statement, Checkers expressed condolences and shock over the incident.
“We are shocked and saddened by the incident that occurred last night at our restaurant in Kissimmee, Florida,” a spokesperson said. “The actions of this one employee do not reflect the values of the thousands of our hardworking employees across the country. We are working closely with the police in their investigation, and we are sending our thoughts and prayers to the guest’s family.”
