A shooting near a boat dock in Little River, South Carolina left at least 11 people hospitalized Sunday night, according to police.
The Horry County Police Department confirmed officers responded to the scene on Watson Avenue around 9:30 p.m. on May 25. The violence broke out near the Intracoastal Waterway, about 20 miles northeast of Myrtle Beach.
In an update posted to Facebook at 10:20 p.m., police said 11 victims were transported to local hospitals by Horry County Fire Rescue. Authorities added that others may have arrived at hospitals on their own.
“This is an active and ongoing investigation,” the department said, noting that the shooting appears to be an isolated incident. “There is no risk to the community at this time.”
Police urged residents to avoid the area while public safety crews continued their work.
Adding to the chaotic night, a North Myrtle Beach police officer was injured in a separate incident while responding to an unrelated call near the scene. The officer accidentally discharged his weapon, shooting himself in the leg.
“The officer was transported from the scene to the hospital where he is in stable condition,” officials said in a statement. “No other individuals were injured, and there is no ongoing threat to public safety.”
Authorities have not released details about what led to the shooting, the identities of those involved, or whether any arrests have been made.
The investigation is ongoing, and police say more information will be shared as it becomes available.
