A young Georgia mother was senselessly killed in front of her 2-year-old son after suspected gang members allegedly opened fire on her car in a brutal case of mistaken identity.
Ne’Jha Cox, just 21 years old, was riding with her boyfriend and toddler on Hollywood Road in Atlanta when gunfire erupted. Prosecutors say local gang members mistook their vehicle for one belonging to a rival group—and opened fire without warning.
The heartbreaking scene left Cox dead at the scene as her child watched his mother bleed out beside him.
“The child was there the whole time and saw his mother die,” said Amanda Green, assistant district attorney for the Fulton County gang unit, in an interview with WSB. “It’s unimaginable.”
Surveillance footage captured 24-year-old Jamal Baker, then 23, firing multiple rounds into the car. Police recovered 39 shell casings from the scene. Baker was convicted this week of murder, aggravated assault, weapons charges, and second-degree cruelty to children. He was sentenced to life without parole plus 65 years.
District Attorney Fani Willis described Cox as an innocent victim caught in the crossfire of gang violence. “She had absolutely nothing to do with gangs,” Willis said. “She’s not a criminal. She was a young mother.”
Two others were also involved in the shooting. One, Cartez Harvey, 19 at the time, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, weapons offenses, and cruelty to children. A third suspect was also apprehended. Both are expected to face trial later this month.
