A heartbreaking scene unfolded in Katy, Texas, on Saturday when a woman and her 7-year-old son were found shot to death in what investigators are calling a murder-suicide carried out by the father.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call at an apartment complex where deputies discovered the bodies of a 43-year-old woman and her young son, both dead from gunshot wounds. The suspected gunman—identified as the woman’s 42-year-old husband—was found still alive at the scene but later died after being taken to the hospital.
Officials say the man had been struggling with recent unemployment and personal issues, and had reportedly sought treatment for mental health concerns. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez stated during a press conference that the little boy was found dead in bed.
“We don’t know what happened today that led him to take this type of action,” Gonzalez said. “But clearly, something very tragic unfolded in that home.”
Two other people were inside the apartment when the shooting occurred—a 19-year-old woman believed to be the couple’s daughter and her boyfriend. Neither of them was harmed.
Detectives, homicide investigators, and CSI teams are actively working the case as authorities continue to piece together what led to the devastating act. So far, the names of the deceased have not been released.
The case remains under investigation.
