A Georgia daycare worker has been arrested after a disturbing case of alleged child abuse at Little Blessings Child Care in Bainbridge.
Police say 54-year-old Yvette Thurston was taken into custody on Monday, Aug. 11, and is facing one count of first-degree aggravated battery and three counts of first-degree child abuse. Authorities revealed that surveillance video from inside the daycare showed what happened before officers made the arrest.
The father of one of the victims, 1-year-old Clay, said he saw the footage alongside investigators. “Nothing we saw was for the faint-hearted, especially happening to such an innocent soul,” said Cory Weeks. Days later, on Aug. 14, Weeks shared heartbreaking photos of Clay on Facebook, showing the toddler with bruising, swelling around his eye, and scratches on his face.
Weeks added that both Clay and his 3-year-old brother Wyatt had just started their very first day at the daycare when the incident unfolded. He described the ordeal as “every parent’s worst nightmare” and claimed staff initially told him another child had caused the injuries with a toy.
Police confirmed Clay was treated at a local hospital. Records show Thurston bonded out of Decatur County Jail after posting $44,000 bail. The incident occurred at a facility affiliated with Bainbridge Church of God, officials said.
The Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning announced it has launched its own investigation. “Our agency is currently conducting a thorough investigation into the situation. It has been confirmed that a teacher has been arrested in connection with these allegations,” DECAL said in a statement.
