A shocking tragedy has rocked a quiet Illinois community after a man was arrested and accused of murdering his wife — with her body allegedly found in the back of his car.

On Monday, September 1, just after 8 p.m., deputies with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office received a chilling report of a possible homicide. The tip included a description of the suspect and his vehicle, a gray 2007 Ford Escape.

Less than an hour later, an officer with the Christopher Police Department spotted the SUV traveling west on State Highway 148. Backup quickly arrived, and officers conducted a high-risk traffic stop.

Behind the wheel was 51-year-old John W. Finney. Inside the vehicle, investigators say they made a gruesome discovery — the body of his wife, 42-year-old Amy J. Finney.

While John was being detained, police searched the couple’s home in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. There, authorities allege they found evidence suggesting Amy was killed inside the residence before her body was placed in the car.

“Preliminary evidence gathered strongly supports that Amy Finney died from a gunshot wound during a domestic dispute with John at their home,” the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

Amy’s body is now in the custody of the Perry County Coroner’s Office as investigators work to piece together exactly what happened.

John Finney has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder. He is currently being held in the Jefferson County Jail while awaiting his pretrial detention hearing.

It remains unclear if John has entered a plea or obtained legal representation.

This tragic case has left neighbors and loved ones stunned, as investigators continue digging into the events that led to Amy’s death.
