A funeral at a Christian church in Jordan turned into a scene of terror when armed men opened fire on mourners, killing at least nine people and injuring 40 others in an attack that has shocked the Middle Eastern nation.
The shooting unfolded Friday, October 23, at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church in the village of Hamoud, located in Jordan’s southern Karak province, approximately 110 miles from the capital, Amman.
Families and friends had gathered to mourn a member of their community when gunmen arrived in a vehicle and began firing toward people gathered outside the church.
Within moments, what should have been a solemn religious service became a desperate struggle for survival.
Surveillance footage shows at least three armed men approaching the church entrance before opening fire. Terrified mourners can be seen scrambling for cover as the attackers move toward the building.
Witnesses described several minutes of continuous gunfire, with some worshippers seeking shelter inside the church while others attempted to escape through the courtyard.
Dorgham Halasa, who attended the funeral, told the Associated Press that the shooting began approximately 15 minutes after the service started.
He described the gunfire as unusually intense, recalling the confusion and fear that spread through the gathering.
Between 150 and 200 people were reportedly inside and around the church when the attack began.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene as police secured the surrounding streets and medical personnel transported injured worshippers to nearby hospitals.
Authorities initially reported seven deaths and 34 injuries, but the casualty figures increased as hospitals provided additional information.
By Saturday, October 24, the death toll had climbed to nine, with Reuters reporting that 40 people were wounded.
Jordanian officials said several patients required intensive medical treatment. Health Minister Ibrahim Badour also confirmed that many of the injured remained hospitalized.
The identities of the victims have not all been publicly released.
Jordan’s Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya described the shooting as an act of terrorism, while security officials launched a nationwide search for those responsible.
Investigators are examining surveillance footage, eyewitness accounts and other evidence to establish the attackers’ identities and determine whether they were connected to an extremist organization.
No group has publicly claimed responsibility, and authorities have not confirmed the gunmen’s affiliations.
The attack has deeply shaken Jordan, where incidents of mass violence targeting Christian communities are rare.
Christians account for approximately 2% of the country’s population, but their communities have existed in the region for centuries.
Karak is particularly known for its longstanding Christian population and traditions of coexistence between Muslim and Christian residents.
The fact that the attackers targeted mourners gathered for a funeral has made the tragedy especially disturbing.
Jordan’s King Abdullah II responded with a forceful condemnation, promising that those responsible would be pursued and held accountable.
During a National Security Council meeting Saturday, the king instructed security agencies to intensify their efforts and strengthen protections against future attacks.
He emphasized that the country’s security and national unity would not be undermined by violence.
Prime Minister Jafar Hassan also condemned the shooting, describing it as the product of extremist ideology and religious fanaticism.
Government officials urged Jordanians to remain united rather than allowing the attack to create divisions between religious communities.
The shooting has also drawn international concern, particularly because Jordan is considered one of the more stable countries in a region that has experienced years of conflict and extremist violence.
The country has faced terrorist attacks before, including a deadly series of shootings in Karak in December 2016 that targeted security personnel and civilians.
However, an attack against mourners at a Christian funeral represents an especially painful moment for the community.
Security has been increased at sensitive locations, including foreign diplomatic facilities and major public gathering places, as investigators continue searching for the attackers.
For the families in Hamoud, the tragedy has transformed a day of mourning into an even greater loss.
