A California man has been sentenced to spend the rest of his life behind bars after brutally killing his sister’s ex-boyfriend and then fleeing the country for nearly two years.
Raymond Lynde, 33, received a sentence of 51 years to life in prison for the 2020 murder of 23-year-old Ariel Burquez, according to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office.
The attack happened in July 2020 outside Burquez’s apartment complex in Chula Vista. Lynde had only recently been released from a 12-year prison term for armed robberies in Orange County when prosecutors say he “ambushed” Burquez. He stabbed the young man 28 times, leaving him to die at his own front door.
After the killing, Lynde got rid of the knife, hid his bloody clothes, and escaped to Mexico, where he lived under the radar for nearly two years before being tracked down and arrested in May 2022.
“This was a savage murder that was motivated by animosity and revenge,” District Attorney Summer Stephan said in a statement. “I hope today’s sentence closes a chapter and brings a measure of justice for the family of Mr. Burquez. We’re grateful to our law enforcement colleagues in Mexico for their help in bringing the defendant back to San Diego to be held accountable for his vicious crime.”
During the trial, Lynde’s sister testified that she had dated Burquez for about six months in 2018 and 2019. After their breakup, Burquez allegedly vandalized her property and even fired shots at her in the weeks before the murder.
Lynde admitted to stabbing Burquez but insisted he acted in self-defense. The jury rejected that claim, convicting him of murder and ensuring he will likely never walk free again.
