A first grader in Iowa is being hailed as a hero after a quick-thinking note may have saved their mother’s life.
On the morning of September 24, just before 7:30 a.m., the child slipped a piece of paper to their school bus driver that read simply, “Call 911.” The driver immediately alerted authorities, and deputies from the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office rushed to a home in Westgate, a small rural community, to investigate.
Inside, officers discovered the child’s mother allegedly being held against her will by 29-year-old Glenroy Miller of the Bahamas. Police say Miller had assaulted her throughout the night, kicking her with such force that she suffered two broken ribs and a punctured lung. Unable to call for help in front of him, the woman reportedly wrote the desperate message and handed it to her child, who bravely carried it onto the bus.
Miller was arrested later that morning and is facing a long list of charges, including armed kidnapping, willful injury, domestic abuse assault with intent to cause serious injury, and obstruction of emergency communications. He is currently being held on a $1,500 bond and has also been detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Court records show the child is only in first grade, making their act of courage all the more remarkable. Local outlets report that the mother is now receiving medical treatment for her injuries.
The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office has not released further details but credited the child’s brave actions—and the bus driver’s quick response—for helping to bring the situation to an end before it turned even more tragic.
