A heartbreaking tragedy has shaken the community of Kenmore Hills, Queensland, after a mother and her young daughter were found dead in what police are investigating as a suspected murder-suicide.
According to Queensland Police, officers and emergency crews conducted a welfare check just after noon on Monday, September 29, at a rental property in Kenmore Hills. Inside, they discovered the bodies of a 54-year-old woman from Norman Park, Brisbane, and her 8-year-old daughter. The scene was immediately declared a crime scene.
“There is no ongoing threat to the public,” authorities said in a statement, adding that investigations are still underway to piece together the circumstances. Local reports identified the mother as a respected Brisbane anesthetist who worked across several hospitals.
Both Metro South Health and Princess Alexandra Hospital issued condolences to those affected, calling the deaths a devastating loss.
Footage published by 7 News showed the mother taking out garbage less than 24 hours before she and her daughter were found deceased. According to Sky News Australia, police had been alerted by someone who knew the woman after receiving an email that allegedly outlined her intentions.
The mother and daughter were discovered inside a luxurious four-bedroom Airbnb property that had been listed since 2023. The home, once sold for more than $1.6 million, boasted an infinity pool and expansive verandas, but has since been pulled from rental sites following the tragedy.
Neighbors expressed shock, with some saying they had no idea the home was even being rented. “We didn’t hear much until there was a lot of police activity in the street,” resident Dirk Vandenbroucke told ABC News. Another neighbor described the area as typically close-knit and friendly.
Queensland Premier David Crisafulli called the incident “distressing for everyone, including the first responders who had to see.”
Police are now urging anyone with information or relevant footage to come forward as they continue their investigation into the devastating loss of a mother and her child.
