A quiet community in Ireland has been left in shock after a family of three was brutally killed in their own home, just weeks after celebrating a milestone anniversary.

Mark and Louise O’Connor, who had recently marked 33 years of marriage, were found dead alongside their adult son, Evan, at their home in Tallanstown, Co. Louth, on Monday, September 29. Evan, who had autism, was in his 20s.

According to reports from the Irish Times, the Irish Independent, and the BBC, police believe the family was stabbed to death. Gardaí, Ireland’s national police, have arrested a man in his 30s in connection with the murders. His name has not been released, and authorities have not shared a possible motive.

The crime was discovered after a care worker arrived at the O’Connor home and found Mark’s body near the front gates. Evan was later discovered at the side of the house, and Louise was found upstairs.

Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan called the killings a “criminal act” and confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public, adding that investigators believe the suspect acted alone.

The O’Connors were well known in their community. Mark worked for the National Advocacy Service, which supports people with disabilities, while Louise was a nurse who also taught English to Ukrainian refugees. Earlier this month, Mark had shared a heartfelt anniversary post on social media, writing that he and Louise were “still very much in love” and celebrating the fact they had just paid off their mortgage in June.

Neighbors and friends described the tragedy as devastating. The family’s home has been sealed off as police investigate, and post-mortem examinations are scheduled at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.
