A Queens man has been charged in a gruesome stabbing that left his mother-in-law dead, his teenage brother-in-law hospitalized, and a house engulfed in flames.
Police say 27-year-old Weisheng Chen fatally stabbed his 50-year-old mother-in-law and seriously injured her 17-year-old son inside their family home on Smart Street in Flushing on Thursday afternoon.
According to investigators, Chen attacked the pair during an argument before setting a back room on fire and slashing his own wrists. He was found in critical condition and taken into custody at the scene.
Authorities say Chen faces six counts of murder, along with charges of arson, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon.
Neighbors watched in horror as smoke poured from the multi-family home, with first responders rushing to save those trapped inside. Eight firefighters suffered smoke inhalation while battling the blaze.
Police said the victims were rushed to the hospital, where the 50-year-old woman died from her injuries. The teen remains hospitalized in stable condition.
Relatives living in the basement of the home told reporters they were stunned by the violence, saying Chen was married to their cousin. “He stabbed our aunt and her son,” one relative said. “Then he set the house on fire.”
Authorities are continuing to investigate the motive behind the brutal attack.
