A heartbreaking tragedy has rocked a Georgia community after a two-year-old boy was killed by his babysitter’s dogs while she was reportedly asleep in another room.

According to the Valdosta Police Department, 48-year-old Stacy Wheeler Cobb has been charged with second-degree murder and second-degree cruelty to children following the death of Kaimir Jones, a toddler left in her care.

The fatal attack happened on Saturday, October 4, at Cobb’s home on Pecan Drive in Valdosta, where she was running an unlicensed daycare.

Police say Kaimir’s mother, Adrianna Jones, dropped him off that morning before heading to work. At some point, Cobb allegedly fell asleep, leaving Kaimir unsupervised for at least two hours. During that time, the toddler reportedly wandered into the backyard, where he managed to open a kennel housing two large Rottweilers. The dogs attacked, and Kaimir was mauled to death.

Emergency responders arrived to find the boy deceased in the yard. Cobb allegedly told officers she assumed Kaimir was also napping and was unaware he had gone outside.

“This is a horrible and tragic event that should have never occurred,” said Valdosta Police Chief Leslie Manahan. “But because of negligence on this offender’s behalf, a mother has tragically lost a child.”

Adrianna later shared her side of the story on a GoFundMe page set up to cover her son’s funeral expenses. She wrote that Cobb’s daycare had come highly recommended and that she had no idea Rottweilers were even on the property. Adrianna said she became alarmed when Cobb, who usually texted updates throughout the day, didn’t respond for over three hours. Trusting her instincts, she left work early.

When she arrived at Cobb’s home, police were already on the scene.

“They were already inside taking pictures and so forth,” Adrianna wrote. “This was a heartbreaking, devastating, and traumatizing scene that I wouldn’t wish on anyone. I found my baby like this.”

Cobb was arrested at the scene and booked into the Lowndes County Jail. Animal control also removed the two Rottweilers involved in the attack, along with a third dog that was found in the home.

As of this week, Adrianna’s GoFundMe has raised over $14,700—surpassing the original $14,000 goal. She has since increased the goal to $24,000 to help cover additional expenses. She explained that, like many parents, she didn’t have life insurance for her young son.

Sadly, incidents like this are becoming more frequent. DogBite.org, a nonprofit that tracks fatal dog attacks in the U.S., reported 63 dog bite-related deaths in 2023—the highest annual total since they began tracking in 2005. Children accounted for nearly a quarter of those fatalities.

Rottweilers and pit bulls continue to be the most deadly breeds. Combined, they were responsible for 76 percent of all fatal dog attacks recorded since 2005.

Just last month, a 10-year-old girl in California was killed by her family’s XL Bully—a breed closely related to pit bulls. Earlier in September, a one-week-old baby was mauled to death by his family’s husky-pit bull mix.

  1. I’m so sorry for your loss of your sweet little child. This is the reason why I don’t trust big aggressive dogs around any children. This is so sad that this happened to your child. I don’t trust the babysitter who are careless enough to be around them. She knew that her aggressive dogs are dangerous to around with children. I’m sorry. I just wish this didn’t happen. I pray for you.
