A Kentucky substitute teacher, Krystal Sims, 30, has been charged with alleged inappropriate communication and planning a sexual encounter with a minor, according to a copy of a uniform citation obtained by People.com.
The citation claims that Sims used electronic means to procure or promote sexual activity with a juvenile, stemming from events in August. In one incident, the male student allegedly recorded a phone call in which Sims asked whether he would meet her. Later, during a video chat, the student says he saw her exposed while she was in the shower. Others are said to have witnessed the exposure.
According to investigators, the two first met when Sims was working as a substitute teacher, and continued communicating via Snapchat. Before long, they allegedly began planning a meeting in Cave City, about 90 miles north of Nashville, Tennessee. On Aug. 22, the student reportedly recorded a call in which Sims asked if he would come meet her. That conversation was played for a detective.
The student says their discussion later shifted to video, where Sims appeared nude. The detective’s report states that others in the video chat also saw her exposed. When questioned by authorities, Sims confirmed she was on the recorded call but denied that meeting was intended for anything beyond an apology. She claimed she never accepted social media requests from her students and denied that any physical meeting outside the classroom ever took place.
Authorities arrested Sims on Oct. 2, and she is slated for arraignment on Nov. 6, according to the People article. Facing charges that include procuring or promoting the use of a minor for sexual activity via electronic means, Sims could receive up to five years in prison if convicted. Her attorney has stated that she plans to plead not guilty and that the public record does not yet reflect the full story.
This disturbing case raises critical questions about boundaries, trust, and the responsibility of educators in their interactions with students. As the legal process unfolds, many will be watching closely to see how justice is served.
