A shocking double homicide has rocked the quiet community of Walnut Creek, California, where a man stands accused of brutally killing his wife and mother-in-law—and allegedly involving his romantic partner in the aftermath.
Howard Wang, 43, is facing multiple felony charges, including two counts of murder with special circumstances, as well as charges related to witness intimidation and prior threats involving his wife, Linlin Guo, according to the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office.
Guo and her mother, Beimin Cheng, were discovered dead inside the family’s multimillion-dollar home just 20 miles east of San Francisco. Both women had suffered fatal stab wounds to the neck.
According to authorities, Wang initially told police that an intruder had entered the home and attacked the women, escaping even after Wang claimed to have fired multiple shots at the alleged assailant. Investigators quickly raised doubts about the story.
Adding to the tragedy, the couple’s 8-year-old twin daughters were reportedly home at the time of the killings.
Days after Wang’s arrest, police also took 45-year-old Yan Wang into custody. Despite sharing the same last name, the two are not related. The district attorney’s office confirmed the pair were in a romantic relationship.
Yan now faces charges of destroying evidence, being an accessory after the fact, and first-degree residential burglary. Prosecutors allege she helped Howard Wang after the murders, with full knowledge of the crime, and with the intent of helping him avoid prosecution.
Investigators believe she entered the crime scene after the fact and destroyed cellphones, possibly to prevent key evidence from being recovered.
The case took another dramatic turn during Yan’s first court appearance, where local outlet KTVU reports she got into a physical altercation with a member of the victims’ family. Deputies intervened to break it up.
District Attorney Diana Becton released a statement on the case, calling it a “sobering reminder of domestic violence’s far-reaching consequences,” and vowed that her office would pursue justice with urgency and seriousness.
Court records also reveal that Howard Wang had filed for divorce from Linlin Guo in 2024 but later withdrew the petition.
He is currently being held without bail and could face life in prison if convicted
