An 82-year-old woman, described by friends as “the nicest person in Sun City,” is now facing murder charges after allegedly shooting her husband inside a nursing home in coastal South Carolina. Authorities believe the shooting was planned.
Harriet Kay Recker, 82, reportedly shot and killed her 81-year-old husband, Dennis Recker, on September 12 at the Preston Health Center on Hilton Head Island, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office. She’s charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
Investigators say they found notes in her purse, at her home, and sent to a neighbor that suggest the shooting was premeditated. Financial documents and interviews back up this theory.
Dennis Recker had just been admitted to the facility a day before the shooting due to health problems that required extra care, according to court testimony reported by WTOC.
A neighbor who had driven the couple to the nursing home briefly stepped out of the room when a loud noise was heard. When they rushed back in, they found Harriet holding a gun and Dennis with a gunshot wound to the chest.
Despite efforts to save him, Dennis died from his injuries. A witness told police Dennis seemed shocked and said, “She shot me,” before he passed away.
Harriet reportedly told investigators, “He was a good man,” and called the situation “sad.”
During the investigation, authorities found a note in Harriet’s purse about her declining health and emotional struggles. Similar notes were discovered at her home and sent to a neighbor.
Part of the note, read aloud in court, said: “To you all, this has just been too much for me. I so wish I could do it with the wonderful family we have, so many good friends. We can’t have a life without someone, and that someone can’t be me, as I am not strong enough or smart enough to do all this.”
Harriet Recker was booked into Beaufort County Jail the same day and is being held without bond.
Friends and neighbors are still in shock. Ted Dwemoh, who did pest control at the couple’s Sun City home, said he couldn’t believe the news.
“When I saw her picture, I was dumbfounded. There’s no way this woman did what they say she did,” he said. “She was always so kind. She would offer snacks and water when I came to her house. She really was the nicest person in Sun City.”
The investigation is still ongoing.
