A quiet Sunday morning in the English town of Stafford turned into a heartbreaking tragedy when two toddlers were found dead inside a home on Corporation Street. Now, a woman has been arrested on suspicion of their murder.
According to Staffordshire Police, officers were called to the scene around 7:30 a.m. on October 12 after receiving a report from West Midlands Ambulance Service. When emergency responders arrived, they discovered two injured and unresponsive children. Despite the efforts of paramedics, both were pronounced dead at the scene.
The children have been identified as Meraj Ul Zahra, aged 2, and Abdul Momin Alfaateh, aged 3, according to the BBC and The Times.
“We were called to a home on Corporation Street,” police confirmed in a statement. “The children’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers at this tragic time.”
The West Midlands Ambulance Service said it dispatched two ambulances and two paramedic officers after receiving the call at 7:26 a.m. A spokesperson added, “Sadly, it quickly became apparent nothing could be done to save them.”
A 43-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody. Her identity has not been made public.
Detective Inspector Kirsty Oldfield, leading the investigation, urged the public not to speculate. “We are working hard to understand more about what happened leading up to these two children tragically losing their lives,” she said. “Speculation can be distressing for the family and may hinder our enquiries.”
She also confirmed that there is no wider threat to the community and that a police cordon remains in place at the scene.
The case has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), as there was recent police contact involving the family prior to the children’s deaths. In a statement to the BBC, the IOPC said it would assess the referral to determine whether any further action is needed.
Neighbors have expressed shock and sorrow at the unfolding tragedy. One told The Times they saw a surviving child being carried out of the house by police officers, as the children’s “distraught” father looked on.
Another resident, Luke Browne, 61, said he saw police and forensic teams outside the house as he left for work. “It’s very sad. Children dying is a horror. It’s quite painful to hear it,” he said. “I’ve only lived here a year, but everyone I’ve met has been lovely.”
Police are asking anyone with information that may assist the investigation to come forward.
