Man Kills His Mother, Blames It on Fake Home Intruder

A North Carolina man will spend nearly three decades behind bars after fatally shooting his mother and trying to cover it up with a false story about a break-in.

Donald Fink, 34, was sentenced on October 7 to between 28 and 35 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the 2023 killing of his mother, 65-year-old Debra “Debbie” Fink, according to the Forsyth County District Attorney’s Office.

The case began on June 12, 2023, when police in Kernersville responded to a 911 call about a possible home invasion. When officers arrived, they found Debbie Fink dead from a gunshot wound to the face.

Donald, who was at the scene, initially claimed an intruder had broken in and shot his mother. But investigators quickly began to question his story after he gave “multiple inconsistent statements” about what he had been doing at the time of the shooting.

A few days later, Donald admitted to police that he made up the story. He confessed to kicking in a door to make it look like a break-in before calling 911. He told officers he had been holding the 9mm handgun — the same one found at the scene — when it went off and killed his mother. He claimed the shooting was accidental.

Forensics told a different story. Investigators found Donald’s DNA on both the gun and the extended magazine, and his hands tested positive for gunshot residue. Witnesses also said they saw him with the gun after the shooting, and one woman reported that Donald had pointed the firearm at her earlier that day. No one saw anyone else enter or leave the home around the time of Debbie’s death.

The gun used in the shooting had been registered to Debbie, but she had reported it stolen three months earlier.

Prosecutors also revealed that Debbie had recently undergone major knee surgery and couldn’t stand or walk without help — raising even more doubts about the possibility of her being involved in a confrontation with an intruder. Witnesses said she was afraid of her son and had previously told people that he had stolen money from her and threatened her life.

At the sentencing hearing, Debbie’s sisters, Terri Norman and Brenda Duhon, addressed the court and expressed relief that the case had come to a close.

Donald Fink will now serve his time in state prison, finally bringing a tragic chapter to an end for a grieving family.
