A late-night fast food run turned into a terrifying scene when a Florida McDonald’s employee opened fire during a violent confrontation with two angry customers, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
The shooting happened around 3 a.m. on October 12 at a McDonald’s in Davenport. Sheriff Grady Judd said the trouble started when two young men, Peter Story, 19, and Nicholas Jones, 18, got upset over how long their drive-thru order was taking.
Yoan Soto, 21, was working the overnight shift when the pair reportedly began threatening him. Although Soto apologized and explained the kitchen was backed up with online orders, Judd said the two told him they’d wait until his shift ended to attack him.
Surveillance video showed Story and Jones entering the lobby and confronting Soto. Things quickly escalated, and according to Judd, the two men allegedly threatened him with weapons described as a “switch” and a “30-clip.” Soto then pulled out a firearm.
As the confrontation turned physical, investigators say the men tried to grab Soto’s gun. During the struggle, Soto fired, hitting Peter Story in the neck. Miraculously, the wound was minor.
“When you start shooting McGuns, you get people’s McAttention,” Judd said during a press conference.
After the shooting, Story and Jones fled. Soto, panicked, picked up the shell casings and left the scene as well. He was later charged with tampering with evidence. Jones and Story were charged with trespass after warning and disorderly conduct.
The sheriff noted Soto appeared to be acting in self-defense and reminded the public not to run after a shooting, even in fear. “They created a well-founded fear in him and the store manager. It was just a McMess,” Judd said.
The investigation is ongoing, and McDonald’s has not yet commented on the incident.
