A 41-year-old Texas woman has been charged with felony child abuse after police discovered her 11-year-old son in disturbing living conditions, weighing just 46 pounds and allegedly covered in feces.
According to a criminal complaint filed in Harris County, Baytown police responded to a mobile home in May after receiving an urgent welfare check request. The home belonged to Rachel Nicole Blaylock, who lived there with her son.
Court documents state that the boy is nonverbal, has never attended school, and has been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. When officers entered the home, they were immediately hit with a strong odor. The floors were covered in dried feces, and flies filled the air. One officer said the smell was so overwhelming that she nearly vomited.
Blaylock allegedly admitted to replacing her son’s bedroom door with a screen door and locking it to keep him from leaving the house. Officers described the bedroom as filthy, with fecal matter smeared on the floor and mattress. The boy himself had dried feces on his face, arms, hands, and under his fingernails.
When officers suggested taking the child to the hospital, Blaylock reportedly refused, saying she didn’t want to “drop everything” just to see doctors who wouldn’t have answers.
The child’s grandmother told police that the boy was often locked inside his room all day, and only Blaylock and her boyfriend had the key. She said she couldn’t get in to give him food or water and described her daughter as not being involved in his care.
The boy was taken to a hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with autism, severe malnutrition, developmental delays, and significant dental decay. Medical staff also noted concerns about possible sexual abuse. At just 46 pounds, his weight was well below the healthy average for an 11-year-old boy.
Blaylock has been charged with felony injury to a child causing serious bodily injury. On October 8, she was also charged with methamphetamine possession in a separate case. Her bond was set at $250,000.
