A Georgia pre-K teacher is facing disturbing allegations after classroom security footage allegedly captured her violently abusing children as young as 4 and 5 years old.
Tanesha Herrington, 47, has been charged with eight counts of first-degree cruelty to children, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Her classroom assistant, Courtney Dutton, 37, has been charged with one count of failing to report child abuse after allegedly witnessing the violence and doing nothing.
The investigation began after the Claxton Police Department received an anonymous tip accusing Herrington of hurting students in her care. Authorities reviewed footage from a security camera installed inside the classroom and say what they saw was shocking.
According to the GBI, the footage shows Herrington hitting two students repeatedly in the face, grabbing one child by the throat, forcefully lifting sleeping students by their arms, slapping another child on the arm before shoving them, and throwing a bookbag at a student who was sitting on the floor.
Investigators say the recordings include incidents from both the current and previous school years. Dutton, a paraprofessional assigned to assist Herrington, was allegedly in the classroom during several of the assaults and failed to alert authorities, which she was legally required to do.
The GBI said more footage is still under review, and additional victims could be identified, potentially leading to further charges.
Claxton, where the incident occurred, is a small city about 50 miles west of Savannah. The Atlantic Circuit District Attorney’s Office will handle prosecution once the investigation is complete.
