A driver fleeing a minor car crash slammed into a USPS truck, killing a longtime mail carrier in northwest Houston, according to Texas authorities.

Deputies arrested 48-year-old Jose Humberto Romero on a charge of intoxication manslaughter following the fatal collision, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez announced in an October 18 news release.

The victim was identified as 58-year-old Steven Marks, a U.S. Postal Service employee with 28 years of service.

Investigators say Romero was involved in a minor accident just moments before the deadly crash. As he attempted to flee the scene, he reportedly sped down Antoine Drive, lost control of his vehicle, and struck the back of Marks’ postal truck as the mail carrier was making deliveries in a residential area.

Marks was rushed to the hospital but died from his injuries, officials confirmed.

“The Postal Service is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life yesterday in a two-vehicle accident in Houston, TX, involving our Postal family member with 28 years of service,” USPS said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with their family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. We will be offering counseling services to our employees at the Cornerstone Post Office as the investigation into the incident continues.”

Records show Romero was previously arrested on a DWI charge in 2023. His bond has been set at $250,000.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
