Beloved High School Teacher Brutally Murdered by Husband

A small Texas town is heartbroken after the sudden and tragic death of a beloved high school teacher — and the shocking arrest of her husband just days later.

Chelsea Spillers, a 33-year-old biology and chemistry teacher at Alvarado High School, was found dead in her Alvarado home on Saturday, October 18. Her death, initially described as “unexplained,” is now being investigated as a homicide. Authorities believe she died from blunt force trauma.

Just two days later, her husband, Brandon Ashley, was arrested in Bedias — a rural town roughly 150 miles away — after a series of bizarre events that included trespassing and erratic behavior.

Grimes County deputies say they received calls on Sunday about a shirtless man wandering onto private property, appearing to be in the midst of a mental health episode. He was reportedly knocking on neighbors’ doors asking for a shirt and told someone he was avoiding the highway because there were “too many cops.”

Ashley was taken into custody Monday morning on suspicion of criminal trespassing. After his arrest, he reportedly told deputies he had hidden a firearm nearby. Investigators later recovered a revolver from the area.

Shortly after, a murder warrant was issued in connection to Chelsea’s death.

Back in Alvarado, the school district and community are reeling. Chelsea wasn’t just a teacher — she was a mentor, a friend, and a source of joy to her students.

“She was the light of my day,” one student said. “I would go to her class after every period just to talk to her.”

Another former student reflected, “Even though she’s gone, she lives on through the students she touched.”

The Alvarado Independent School District described her as a dedicated educator who loved her students and her team. Tributes have flooded in from those who knew her, highlighting the deep impact she made during her career.

As of now, Brandon Ashley remains in custody in Grimes County and is awaiting extradition to face charges. The investigation into Chelsea’s death is still ongoing.
