Authorities in France have arrested a couple following the dramatic escape of a woman who claims she endured five years of torturous captivity.
On the evening of October 14, the 40‑year‑old victim fled to a neighbor’s home in the commune of Saint‑Molf, in western France. She reportedly arrived shivering and disoriented, suffering from hypothermia. Law enforcement agencies soon took the lead in what they are describing as a horrifying case of alleged abuse.
The suspects: a woman in her 60s and an 82‑year‑old man. Both have been charged with kidnapping and torture, according to the Nantes public prosecutor’s office. Their names, along with the victim’s, are being withheld.
Investigators say the trio were once roommates. At some point, the older man moved in, and what followed was allegedly years of abuse and exploitation. Over five years, prosecutors claim the couple forced the woman to live in degrading conditions—first in a garden tent, then locked in a garage where she slept on a deckchair, used plastic bags and a pot as a makeshift toilet, and was fed porridge mixed with dish soap—all while the suspects siphoned her bank account.
The victim finally escaped when the man was watching television, and despite her frail state, knocked on a neighbor’s door for help. Upon searching the property, investigators discovered the garage door blocked by concrete blocks—evidence that supports the victim’s account.
The couple are also under investigation for fraud and abusing the vulnerability of a person. While they have admitted to the living conditions, prosecutors say the suspects are downplaying the severity of the abuse.
An investigation is ongoing as authorities piece together how such prolonged captivity could go unnoticed.

France is like the U.S.
no one gets adequately prosecuted for anything…
