A South Carolina man faces shocking new murder charges after allegedly holding four vulnerable adults captive in his basement for years—and spending their money.
Donnie Ray Birchfield Jr., 35, was charged with murder following the death of one of his alleged captives, 49-year-old Shirley Arnsdorff of Lancaster. Authorities also charged him with first-degree criminal sexual conduct, adding to a growing list of serious accusations.
The disturbing case came to light on July 25, when police responded to a call at Birchfield’s home and found Arnsdorff unresponsive on the floor. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators say she died the day before but her death wasn’t reported until the next day.
During the investigation, police uncovered evidence suggesting that Birchfield had been holding not only Arnsdorff but three other vulnerable adults against their will for years. According to warrants, the victims were controlled in every aspect of their lives—from their eating and bathroom habits to their ability to communicate with others.
Two of the captives were women reportedly involved with Birchfield romantically, with one believed to have been confined since 2015 and another since 2024. Arnsdorff and her husband were also vulnerable adults unable to care for themselves.
Authorities say Birchfield exploited his victims financially, using their money to cover personal expenses. In 2025 alone, he allegedly withdrew nearly $12,000 from one couple’s bank account to pay off credit card debt and shop at Walmart.
Birchfield was arrested on August 1, initially charged with neglect, false imprisonment, financial fraud, and domestic violence. The murder and sexual conduct charges came after further investigation. He remains held without bond at the Lancaster County Detention Center.
The case is now being handled by the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office. Birchfield’s attorney has yet to respond to requests for comment.
