A Colorado driver has pleaded guilty in the deadly DUI crash that claimed the life of a police officer last year.
Stephen Geer admitted on Tuesday, October 14, to vehicular homicide and vehicular assault, both DUI-related, in connection with the death of Golden police officer Evan Dunn, according to the First Judicial District Attorney.
The tragic crash happened on November 6, 2024. Dunn and another officer were stopped at the scene of a previous accident on Highway 58 when Geer’s car struck them. Dunn was killed, and the other officer suffered serious injuries. Two civilians were also hurt in the incident.
Under a plea deal, prosecutors dropped one felony and two misdemeanors, but Geer faces 4 to 18 years in prison. This deal ensures he will serve time behind bars, rather than being eligible for probation if convicted at trial. The DA’s office said the agreement reflects that prison is the only appropriate outcome.
Geer is set to be sentenced on January 21, 2026, and is currently out on a $250,000 bond, reports 9News.
The city of Golden mourned the loss of Dunn, highlighting his service as an Army Aviation Officer and Blackhawk pilot. “The loss of Officer Dunn has struck the Golden Police Department and the entire community deeply,” officials said. “As the Golden community mourns the loss of Officer Dunn, his legacy of dedication, kindness, and courage will not be forgotten.”
Dunn, 33, is survived by his wife, his parents, siblings, and their dog.
