A deadly family feud turned violent on the Greek island of Crete over the weekend, leaving two people dead and at least four others injured in a dramatic shootout that has shocked the small community.

The gunfire broke out around 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 1, in the mountain village of Vorizia, according to local reports from the Associated Press and Greek outlet EPT News.

Police confirmed that a 39-year-old man and a 56-year-old woman were killed in the incident. Four others were rushed to the hospital with injuries—two of whom are currently under police guard for their alleged roles in the shooting.

Investigators believe the violence was fueled by a bitter, long-running feud between two local families that reportedly began years ago over the use of grazing land in the rural area. Authorities also linked an explosion that rocked the village the night before to the same dispute.

On Sunday, November 2, prosecutors filed charges of homicide and attempted homicide against two hospitalized suspects, believed to be directly involved in the shootout.

Police are still searching for at least three more individuals suspected of taking part in the gunfight.

The tragedy has stunned the tight-knit mountain village, where family feuds—though not uncommon in rural Crete—rarely escalate to such deadly extremes.

Authorities continue to investigate what exactly led to the eruption of violence and whether the Friday night explosion was meant as a warning or an act of retaliation.
