A Kentucky mother has pleaded guilty in the tragic drowning death of her 3-month-old baby in a motel bathtub on New Year’s Day.
Amber Winstead, 36, entered a guilty plea to manslaughter on Friday, October 31, according to court records cited by WHAS 11, WLKY, and WDRB.
Authorities said Winstead had taken drugs that day and fell asleep while in the bathtub with her infant in Louisville. When she awoke hours later, the baby was found submerged in the tub and had drowned, WDRB and WLKY reported.
Winstead’s attorney told the court that she is nearing the end of a drug treatment program and requested that she be placed under house arrest until her sentencing in December.
The case has shocked the community, with authorities highlighting the dangers of drug use around children and the devastating consequences of such tragic accidents.
