A former Colorado art teacher is facing multiple serious charges, including first-degree murder, after a shocking stabbing incident Friday night that was captured on video.

Matthew Regnier now faces two counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of first-degree assault, and child abuse, according to court documents obtained by KKTV. The night began when an unidentified woman called 911 to report a domestic disturbance. Just eight minutes later, a man—later identified as Regnier—called 911 himself, saying he was also involved in the situation.

Police from the Colorado Springs Police Department responded to a home in El Paso County, discovering three victims with stab wounds. One male and one female were found unresponsive, while another female was partially responsive. Regnier was located at the scene, naked and covered in blood, holding a two-year-old child.

All three victims were rushed to local hospitals. Tragically, the male victim did not survive. The child, however, was unharmed, and the other victims’ conditions were not immediately released. Regnier suffered deep cuts to two fingers on his left hand, claiming he had been bitten.

In an interview with police, Regnier claimed he had been attacked, strangled, and even touched inappropriately by one of his alleged assailants. He said the fight had been recorded on a phone and that he acted in self-defense during what he described as a “three-on-one assault.”

Authorities reviewed the footage and told Regnier it did not support his self-defense claim, noting he was able to repeatedly break free from the supposed attack.

Local residents are reeling from the incident. Susan Reynolds told KKTV the event was “hard to even fathom.” She added, “I have literally cried every day. It is just so shocking. Everyone is really devastated. How could this happen in our quiet neighborhood?”

Regnier, 33, previously worked as an art teacher at Monument Academy. The school terminated his employment on Sunday, calling the alleged attack “heartbreaking.”

He is scheduled to appear in court Monday afternoon, according to jail records cited by KKTV.
