A woman in Texas endured months of horrific abuse after being allegedly held captive and tortured by people she considered friends, authorities say.
The Austin Police Department responded to a distress call on October 30 around 9 a.m., finding the victim half-naked and chained to a punching bag stand in the backyard of a home. She showed clear signs of prolonged restraint and had visible injuries.
“The woman showed signs of physical distress and had visible injuries consistent with prolonged restraint,” police said.
Firefighters and emergency medical personnel were called to the scene to cut through the heavy metal chains before the woman was rushed to a local hospital for treatment.
During the rescue, officers detained multiple adults who were leaving the home and ensured no other victims or threats remained inside. Three young children at the property were placed in the care of Child Protective Services for safety.
Police say multiple adults at the residence were involved in restraining and assaulting the woman over an extended period. The five suspects — Michelle Garcia, 51; Crystal Garcia, 21; Mache Carney, 32; Juan Pablo Castro, 30; and Maynard Lefevers, 21 — have been charged with aggravated kidnapping, aggravated assault, injury to elderly or disabled persons, and unlawful restraint.
Court documents reveal the shocking details of the abuse. The night before she was rescued, the victim said she was shot with a BB gun as punishment for “getting in trouble” and left outside half-naked overnight. Michelle Garcia allegedly limited her to one meal a day, claiming she had gotten “too chunky.”
Juan Pablo Castro, husband of Carney, reportedly told police, “I [expletive] hate her,” claiming he shot her because he “didn’t want to touch her.” His four-year-old son told authorities that his father would shoot the woman whenever she was “bad,” while his mother watched.
All five suspects remain in the Travis County Jail on $305,000 bail.
