A brand-new Corvette, a Florida oceanside road, and a moment of reckless driving ended in tragedy for a local couple.

Scott P. March, 63, is facing two counts of vehicular manslaughter after he allegedly sped down State Road A1A near Ormond-By-The-Sea at up to 147 mph and crashed into a Jeep, killing husband and wife Thomas and Julia Ann Lauck, both 73.

According to authorities, March had just purchased a 2026 Chevrolet Corvette earlier that day for over $200,000. Around 6 p.m. on Nov. 1, he approached the Laucks’ Jeep, which was traveling well under the 45 mph speed limit, and attempted to pass it in a “no pass zone.” The collision caused the Jeep to flip, and both Thomas and Julia were ejected because they were not wearing seatbelts. Thomas died at the scene, while Julia passed away a few days later in the hospital.

Witnesses told police that March’s driving had been “extremely reckless,” with multiple near-misses and unsafe passes leading up to the crash. Police noted that the area is lined with homes, businesses, and pedestrians, making the high-speed stunt even more dangerous.

March appeared in court with visible facial injuries, including a black eye. During a bond hearing, he admitted he bought the Corvette that same day and said he wasn’t focused on the cost, only on owning the car.

The shocking crash is not March’s first run-in with the law. Authorities say he has a prior DUI conviction from California in 2018. He remains in the Volusia County Jail without bond, and his next court date is scheduled for Dec. 2.

Adding another layer of drama, March was arrested two days after the crash for loitering on a 120-foot yacht called the “Gale Winds.” He claimed ownership of the vessel, but the registered owner said he did not have permission to be there.

The Laucks are remembered by friends and family as a devoted, loving couple. Julia’s obituary described her as someone who “found peace and joy in the simple, quiet moments — watching the waves and sunsets at the beach with her husband and tending to her beautiful gardens.” Thomas was remembered as “a man of quiet strength, steady character, and a generous heart” who loved fishing, beachcombing, and sharing sunsets with his wife.
