An Alabama woman has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for a 2021 crash that killed a pregnant mother and left her four children severely injured, including one teen who may never grow properly again.
The crash, which took place in July 2021 on U.S. Highway 43 in Tuscaloosa County, involved 36-year-old Audra Rogers, who was expecting her fifth child at the time. Rogers’ teenage son, Roman Pruitt, told the court at Anna Dalrymple’s sentencing, “I will never grow anymore,” after surgeons had to break one of his growth plates again during recovery. Roman’s brother, Reed Pruitt, also suffered serious injuries, including a broken femur, a concussion, and a ruptured spleen. “I miss the fun birthdays with my mom and my brothers,” he said.
Dalrymple, 20, pleaded guilty to reckless murder and first-degree assault on Sept. 30. Toxicology reports revealed she had Xanax, Klonopin, methadone, and gabapentin in her system at the time of the crash. “She was high [at the time of the crash],” Senior Assistant District Attorney Corey Seale said. “She had no reason or business driving.”
Authorities say Dalrymple’s 2007 Volvo crossed the center line into oncoming traffic, colliding head-on with Rogers’ 2012 Honda Pilot. Rogers tried to swerve out of the way but couldn’t avoid the crash. Dalrymple’s infant daughter, who was in the car with her, was also injured.
At her sentencing on Monday, Dalrymple expressed remorse. “I just wish this never happened and I’m so very sorry that I did this. I take full responsibility,” she told the court.
Rogers, a mother and former beauty queen, was crowned Ms. Alabama Tourism 2021 and held multiple state powerlifting records. Her mother, Katie Bramlett, described her as a devoted parent. “Those kids were her whole life,” she said. “After she had them, she worked nights because she didn’t want them to go to day care. She was a really cool parent.”
Dalrymple received a split 20-year prison sentence for reckless murder, along with 10 years for first-degree assault. The sentences will run consecutively for the split portions and concurrently for the original portions, according to Patch.
