A 15-year-old Florida boy is facing serious criminal charges after authorities say he shot a bicyclist in the head following a marijuana session with friends.
Tommy Lagree Jr. is being held by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office on second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a minor. While the charges were just filed this week, law enforcement says the teen turned himself in shortly after the shooting in September.
The tragic incident occurred on Sept. 26 around 6 p.m. in Orlando near the 4900 block of Keith Place. According to authorities, Lagree and at least two other people were parked in a van, smoking marijuana. During the gathering, Lagree allegedly pulled a Taurus 9mm handgun from his waistband to show his friends, according to an arrest affidavit.
At some point, 17-year-old Jahriel Huertas rode his bike past the van. Authorities say Lagree fired a shot, hitting Huertas in the head, before he and his companions fled the scene.
When deputies arrived, they found Huertas lying on the road atop his bicycle, suffering from a fatal gunshot wound. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Witnesses reported seeing several individuals running from the van, and a law enforcement helicopter tracked at least two of them to a nearby residence, where they were detained.
Shortly after the shooting, Lagree reportedly arrived at the sheriff’s office with his attorney, admitting to the crime and turning himself in. The handgun used in the shooting was seized, and two of the teens who had been in the van identified Lagree as the shooter.
Authorities have not yet released a motive for the deadly attack. Lagree has been charged as an adult and is expected to appear in court on Dec. 1.
