A family gathering in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana descended into tragedy on Thanksgiving evening when a St. John Parish sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed, allegedly by his own brother, in what authorities are calling a shocking case of family violence.

The victim, Deputy Shaquille Guerin, had served with the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office for eight years. His agency announced the devastating news late Thursday, calling his death a profound loss to both the department and the community he served.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our colleague and friend, Deputy Shaquille Guerin, who was tragically killed in Jefferson Parish,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Sheriff Mike Tregre described Guerin as a dedicated and positive force within the department. “Shaquille did his job well. He had the heart of a public servant,” Tregre said. “He carried and showed positivity as an employee and as a teammate to his coworkers.”

Guerin worked in the uniform patrol division and also served in the detective bureau. He leaves behind his wife, Roxanne, and their three children. Officials are asking the public to keep his family in their thoughts during this difficult time.

According to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, the fatal shooting unfolded just after 5:30 p.m. in the 30 block of Marigold Lane in Waggaman. Deputies responding to reports of gunfire found Guerin lying in the street in front of a residence. Emergency responders and deputies attempted life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

JPSO Captain Jason Rivarde confirmed that the suspect is the victim’s brother, who has since been arrested on a charge of second-degree murder.

Investigators say the brother fled the scene immediately after the shooting, prompting a regional alert for the suspect vehicle. Around 7 p.m., a deputy spotted the vehicle near the intersection of Ames Boulevard and Lapalco Boulevard. When officers attempted a traffic stop, the driver refused to pull over, sparking a pursuit that continued into Jean Lafitte.

The chase ended in the 100 block of Jean Lafitte Boulevard when the suspect stopped and ran from the vehicle. Deputies pursued on foot, quickly catching him and taking him into custody. A firearm was later recovered along the route where the suspect attempted to flee.

The motive behind the deadly confrontation has not yet been released, and the investigation remains active.
