A Pennsylvania father will spend the rest of his life behind bars after being convicted of fatally killing his 25-year-old daughter and leaving her body in a Staten Island park.

Kabary Salem, 57, was found guilty of first-degree murder for strangling and beating Ola Salem in October 2019 in Palmyra, Pennsylvania, about 92 miles northwest of Philadelphia. On Wednesday, Lebanon County Court of Common Pleas Judge Bradford Charles sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

“A father is supposed to love and protect his child, but this defendant committed one of the cruelest acts imaginable,” Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday said. “There is but one acceptable punishment for such a heinous crime. This life sentence will not bring Ola back, but it offers a measure of justice and accountability.”

Ola Salem’s body was discovered on October 24, 2019, partially covered in branches and leaves at Bloomingdale Park. The medical examiner determined she died from asphyxiation and had suffered blunt force trauma, leaving bruises on her face, neck, and legs.

Before this tragedy, Kabary Salem had been an Olympic boxer representing Egypt, and his daughter had briefly considered boxing before dedicating her life to helping domestic violence victims. Friends described Ola as strong-willed and resilient, making the crime all the more shocking.

During the trial, prosecutors relied heavily on surveillance footage and GPS data. On the night of the murder, Salem drove a rental car to multiple locations, including his restaurant, a nearby hotel, and a Lowe’s store, where he bought a blue Kobalt shovel. He returned to the hotel alone, then drove to Staten Island, where Ola’s body was later discovered. The shovel was found nearby.

Physical evidence also played a crucial role. Prosecutors noted that Ola fought for her life, leaving her father’s DNA under her fingernails.

After the crime, Salem left the United States but was later located in Kuwait and extradited back to Pennsylvania to face trial.

During sentencing, Salem claimed his innocence and insisted police had lied about the case, but Judge Charles rejected his statements. “The circumstantial evidence in this case was overwhelming, and the truth that you now have to confront is that a jury found that you committed first-degree murder,” the judge said.
