A woman has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for stabbing her ex-boyfriend’s new girlfriend to death.
Sakiyna Thompson, 31, received the sentence on December 1 after being convicted of first-degree murder in October for the 2022 killing of 23-year-old Kayla Hodgson.
According to authorities, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office received a call on July 13, 2022, reporting that a woman was unresponsive in a home. When officers arrived, they found Hodgson dead. An investigation quickly pointed to Thompson, leading to an arrest warrant on July 25. She was arrested in New York on August 3, 2022, and extradited to Florida to face charges.
Prosecutors said Thompson flew from New York to Florida intending to kill Hodgson out of jealousy. Hodgson was dating Thompson’s ex-boyfriend at the time. Prosecutors said Thompson, wearing a mask, arrived at Hodgson’s apartment by Uber around 5 a.m., stabbed her to death, and then left in a separate Uber registered under a fake account.
Thompson’s attorneys argued she acted in self-defense, claiming she was trying to protect herself and her unborn child. During the trial, Thompson testified that she had gone to Hodgson’s apartment to speak “woman to woman” after being blocked on social media. She alleged that Hodgson had cut her stomach with a piece of glass, prompting her to act in self-defense.
After the stabbing, Thompson admitted she tried to clean up the scene and even changed into Hodgson’s clothes before leaving, saying she was too afraid to call the police.
The jury deliberated for just one hour before finding Thompson guilty, and she will spend the rest of her life in prison.
