A woman out for an evening walk in a park was horrifically attacked when an unknown man poured acid on her head and body.

The victim, 46-year-old Ashley Wasielewski, was walking laps around the perimeter of Forsyth Park in Savannah, GA, when she noticed a shadowy figure approaching from behind, according to The Associated Press. When she turned to face him, the man poured a liquid over her. At first, she thought it was water, but it quickly began burning through her clothes. Wasielewski screamed for help, and a bystander rushed to her aid.

Her son told the AP that his mother is now being treated for second- and third-degree burns covering more than half her body, including her face, scalp, hands, and legs. The acid was reportedly so strong that it melted the key fob in Wasielewski’s pocket.

Detectives are currently trying to identify the chemical used in the attack, but no arrests have been made. Police have increased patrols in local parks as a precaution, and authorities believe the attack was random, according to WTOC.

The FBI has also joined the investigation and is asking the public for any information that could lead to the attacker’s identification.

This terrifying incident has left the community shaken, and authorities are urging anyone with tips to come forward as the investigation continues.
