An Indiana babysitter is facing serious felony charges after police say she violently assaulted a 7-month-old baby, leaving him with severe injuries that doctors say could only have been caused by abuse.

According to the Fort Wayne Police Department, 27-year-old Emily Duran has been charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury and battery to a child under 14 by an adult, also resulting in serious bodily injury.

Officers were called to a local hospital on Dec. 11 after medical staff reported an infant with alarming injuries. Investigators say the incident happened earlier that day at a residence on West Superior Street.

Court records state the baby’s parents dropped off their son with Duran shortly before 7 a.m., and he appeared healthy at the time. When they returned home around 5 p.m., Duran allegedly left quickly — and only then did the parents notice deep purple bruising covering much of their baby’s face, stretching from his jawline to his hairline.

According to the arrest affidavit, Duran later texted one of the parents claiming the baby had fallen earlier in the day. In a recorded phone call, she allegedly told them the child fell off a bench while they were at a park.

Concerned, the parents rushed their son to the hospital, where doctors discovered he was suffering from a brain bleed. Medical experts later told investigators there was no explanation for the injuries other than abuse, noting they were inflicted and could not have been accidental.

Police later located Duran and brought her in for questioning. After being advised of her Miranda rights, authorities say she admitted to slapping the baby on one side of his face and backhanding him on the other.

According to police, Duran said she struck the infant “as hard as you would slap an adult.”

She was arrested and taken to the Allen County Jail, where she later posted bond. Her next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 12.

The investigation remains ongoing as the infant continues to receive medical care.

  1. Yeah … she’d best be scared to walk the streets of Texas if she lived here. I’d be waiting for her. Of course she’s out on bail! Typical, allowing criminals to walk. They need to make an example of these low-life pieces of trash.

  2. 27-year-old Emily Duran is out on bond. Meaning the bond was much too low. Who knows if there could be some permanent brain damage to the child. She is lucky in that the parents are too passive. If it had been my child, she would still be in the hospital with a severe brain bleed, broken nose, broken teeth and whatever else I could inflict on her sorry butt.
