A routine subway ride turned violent in the Bronx, NY after a stranger allegedly slashed a 17-year-old boy in the face with a boxcutter over what police say was nothing more than an accidental bump.
The shocking attack happened just before 4 p.m. on Dec. 23 as the teen was boarding a No. 3 train at the Third Avenue–149th Street station in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx, according to police and law enforcement sources.
Investigators say the teen accidentally bumped into another passenger while getting on the train. Instead of brushing it off, the man reportedly became enraged, snapping, “Why are you pushing us?” before pulling out a boxcutter and slashing the teen across the left side of his face.
The attackeri victim was rushed to Harlem Hospital, where he was treated and listed in stable condition.
The attacker fled the scene and remains on the run. Police have released surveillance images of the suspect and are asking for the public’s help in identifying him.
The incident comes despite city officials pointing to an overall drop in subway crime. Authorities say major subway offenses fell 4% in 2025 compared to the previous year, with robberies down 12.5% and shootings decreasing by more than 60%. Still, random acts of violence like this one continue to alarm riders.
